Most DTF problems come down to a handful of causes: temperature, pressure, time, peel timing or artwork. Here are the ten issues we're asked about most - and how to fix each one.
1. Transfer peels or lifts at the edges
Cause: not enough pressure, time or temperature. Fix: re-press with firm, even pressure and a cover sheet, and confirm your press temperature is accurate.
2. Print cracks after washing
Cause: under-pressing, or skipping the second press. Fix: press for the full time and always finish with a 3-5 second second press.
3. Colours look dull
Cause: temperature too low, or the garment wasn't pre-pressed. Fix: pre-press to remove moisture and check your temperature with a heat strip.
4. Scorch marks on the garment
Cause: temperature too high for the fabric (common on polyester). Fix: lower the temperature, reduce time and cold peel.
5. Film won't peel cleanly
Cause: peeling at the wrong temperature for your film type. Fix: follow the cold/hot peel guidance for your transfer; when unsure, cold peel.
6. Shiny box around the design
Cause: pressing directly without a cover sheet, or artwork with a non-transparent background. Fix: use baking paper on the second press and supply transparent PNG artwork.
7. Print feels stiff or heavy
Cause: oversized solid areas or too much re-pressing. Fix: keep to recommended press times; DTF should stay light and flexible.
8. Edges look rough or fuzzy
Cause: low-resolution artwork. Fix: use 300 DPI files at actual print size.
9. Uneven adhesion across the print
Cause: uneven platen pressure, often from seams or zips. Fix: use a heat-press pillow to even out the surface.
10. Print fades quickly
Cause: washing too hot or tumble drying. Fix: wash inside out at 30°C, air dry, and wait 24 hours before the first wash.
